How to Buy a Diamond Ring in Bangkok
Before you spend money, you need to know the facts including the ones most dealers won't tell you.
Are Diamonds Actually Cheaper in Bangkok?
Simple answer: No. Thailand does not source diamonds, is not a major cutting center, and is not a major diamond trading hub. Diamond prices are globally standardised based on the 4Cs, you will pay the same price anywhere in the world for the same quality stone.
There is also a 7% VAT on diamond purchases in Thailand. On a US$30,000 stone, that is an extra US$2,100 straight to the government. If a dealer is offering you a suspiciously cheap price, they are either avoiding VAT, sacrificing one of the 4Cs, or both.
The real advantage of buying from a Bangkok GIA gemologist is bypassing multiple layers of retail markup, getting one-on-one expert guidance, and having access to custom craftsmanship at wholesale prices, not a magical cheaper diamond.
Understand the 4Cs
These are the four internationally standardised factors that determine a diamond's quality and price. Do your research on these before visiting any dealer.
Cut
Determines brilliance and sparkle. The most important factor a poor cut kills even a high-quality stone.
Ideal: Excellent
Colour
Ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). D–F are most valuable; G–I face up white and offer best value.
Clarity
Internal and external flaws (inclusions). IF is flawless; I3 is heavily included. VVS2–VS2 balances value and eye-cleanliness.
Carat
Indicates size. Price increases exponentially at "magic numbers" — 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 2.00ct. Slight under-sizes offer significant savings.
Never Compromise on Cut
Cut, symmetry and polish is the one factor you should not sacrifice. For round brilliant cut diamonds, the minimum grade for all three should be "Very Good" — ideally "Excellent." A GIA certificate showing Excellent/Excellent/Excellent is called a "Triple Excellent", the benchmark for maximum fire and brilliance.
HRD certificates use "Ideal" or "Excellent Cut" for the same standard. The cut grade is the best way to verify sparkle on paper before you see the stone.
The best way to judge a diamond in person is to place the stone on the ring side of your hand between your fingers. This shows you the actual size, whiteness, and sparkle in a real-world context.
What Makes Diamonds Sell at a Discount
Knowing these factors helps you understand pricing and spot bad deals dressed up as good ones.
Inclusions Under the Table Discount
Black, grey or white crystals sitting under the central facet sell at a significant discount and are visible to the naked eye. Two diamonds with identical GIA grades can have very different prices for this reason alone.
Fluorescence Discount
Medium to strong fluorescence creates a discount due to a reputation for looking milky but in most stones we have seen, this is rarely the case. Take advantage of this discount where it doesn't affect the stone's appearance.
Good–Fair Cut Grade Large Discount
Poorly cut diamonds sell at 20–30% less than Very Good–Excellent equivalents. This is how many Bangkok dealers make a price look like a deal.
Step 3 — Check Online Prices Before You Buy
Before visiting any dealer in Bangkok, check international diamond retailer websites to understand market prices for the 4Cs combination you are looking for. If a Bangkok dealer cannot match or beat international online prices for the same specification, ask why.
- Compare diamond prices by exact cut, colour, clarity and carat weight
- Use the online price as your benchmark, not as the ceiling
- A good Bangkok dealer should beat online prices for the same quality stone
- Always ask to see a GIA certificate, and verify it at gia.edu/report-check-landing
Natural & Lab-Grown Diamonds
Both are real diamonds. Both can be GIA-certified. The difference is origin and what that means for your budget.
Natural Diamonds
Formed over billions of years underground. Each stone is GIA-certified and hand-selected for cut, colour, clarity and brilliance. Best suited for heirloom pieces and those who value natural provenance.
- GIA or HRD certified
- 100% conflict-free sourcing, Kimberley Process
- Available in all shapes and carat sizes
Lab-Grown Diamonds
Chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds, produced in controlled conditions. Fully certifiable. The same 4Cs apply you simply get more carat weight for your budget.
- Typically 80-90% lower cost per carat
- Same sparkle, same certification standards
- A popular choice for larger centre stones
What About a Coloured Gemstone Centre Stone?
Absolutely and we highly recommend it. A natural ruby, sapphire or emerald set with diamond accents makes for a far more unique ring than a standard solitaire. As gemstone specialists since 1959, this is where we genuinely stand apart. Browse examples on our Instagram gallery, or read our free gemstone buying guide to understand what to look for.
Diamond Rings by Carat Weight
Browse our current selection or let us source a specific stone for you. Remember: prices jump at "magic numbers" — 0.49ct instead of 0.50ct can save significantly for the same visual size.

Diamond Ring FAQs
Simple answer: No. Thailand does not source diamonds, is not a major cutting center, and is not a major diamond trading hub. Diamond prices are globally standardised on the 4Cs.
Thailand also charges 7% VAT on diamond purchases on a US$30,000 diamond, that is an extra US$2,100. The best diamond trading centres are Antwerp, Hong Kong, Mumbai, New York and Tel Aviv. The real advantage of working with us is direct access to a GIA gemologist, wholesale pricing, and custom craftsmanship not a magically cheap diamond.
The majority of our diamonds come with a GIA certificate. GIA is the strictest grading authority for colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. You can independently verify any GIA certificate at gia.edu/report-check-landing. We also work with HRD-certified stones where appropriate.
Cut, symmetry and polish, this is the one factor you should never sacrifice. A poorly cut diamond looks dull regardless of its colour or clarity grade.
- Minimum cut grade: Very Good for all three factors
- Ideal: Excellent / Excellent / Excellent (called "Triple Excellent" on a GIA certificate)
- Best value colour: G–I (faces up white, significant savings over D–F)
- Best value clarity: VVS2–VS2 (inclusions invisible to naked eye)
Simple designs take 5–7 working days. More complex or intricate designs take 10–15 working days. We work primarily in 18K gold (white or yellow). Platinum PT950, palladium and silver are also available.
